A tragic update on Rasmus Dahlin’s girlfriend Carolina Matovac

Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has been through a horrific ordeal over the course of the past several months that ultimately culminated in him taking a leave of absence from his team.

Dahlin's girlfriend Carolina Matovac suffered a massive heart failure this past offseason, a shocking medical emergency that nearly cost her her life. Matovac has been recovering back home in Sweden, while Dahlin has been making frequent trips between her and his life in Buffalo.

Today, Matovac revealed that she and her husband were pregnant with their first child but lost the baby after her heart attack in the summer. Today was the baby's due date.

Today was meant to be the day we finally met you. You will always hold a special place in our hearts as our first baby, even though we never had the chance to meet. Our love for you is endless. Though you didn’t get to experience this world, you played a vital role in ensuring that I could continue to be a part of it.

If it weren’t for my worries about you, we might never have called for help and gone to the hospital. Because of that decision, I was in the right place at the right time during my first heart failure. This is just one of the many reasons I am alive today, able to embrace a normal life once again.
