Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin revealed an unimaginable ordeal his fiancée, Carolina, and their families endured this summer.

While on vacation in France, Carolina suddenly fell seriously ill, experiencing major heart failure. Dahlin explained that she required multiple rounds of CPR, sometimes for hours at a time, which ultimately kept her alive.

“Without her receiving lifesaving CPR, the result would have been unimaginable,” Dahlin wrote in a letter shared by the Sabres.

Carolina was transferred to a hospital where she remained on life support for weeks before receiving a heart transplant while still in France. Dahlin described the ordeal as traumatic for both families, and emphasized the incredible medical care that saved her life.

In the emotional letter, he also takes the time to thank everyone who has helped the couple and showed them support through this difficult ordeal.

"While Carolina is still working through her rehab to return to be with me in Buffalo, she has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience that I am in awe of. This has undoubtedly been the most challenging chapter of our lives, however it is something that we have learned so much from. We will continue to grow from these experiences and are so grateful for all the love and support we have received. We are truly blessed in so many ways and fully realize how fortunate we are."

The couple’s focus now turns to recovery, gratitude, and supporting each other after a summer that no one could have foreseen. Dahlin’s openness sheds light on the fragility of life and the importance of swift medical intervention even when they found themselves thousands of miles from home.

A reminder that life is much more important than hockey.
