Reactions from Flames, Coyotes GMs following Mike Smith trade.

In one of the biggest transaction of the day, former Coyotes goalie Mike Smith packed his bag and move to the True North with the Calgary Flames. After spending 6 years of his already long career, Smith gets a fresh start in arguably one of the most promising team in the NHL. The Flames have shown some great flashes during the last season, but the goaltender was heretic at times and Smith might be the quick fix the team needed badly.

When asked about the motivations behind the move, Flames GM Brad Treliving had this quote to provide.

Reading between the lines here, we can understand Smith was the cheap, yet effective solution to a problem. However, his former boss John Chayka sees it a bit differently from his seller perspective.

Chayka is known for his intense focus on rebuilding the Arizona Coyotes through analytical and long-term analysis. Mike Smith still has 2 years at 5,6M$ a year to spend on his contract and the freed cap space will be a good argument in favor of rebuilding in Arizona.

It will be interesting to see how Smith will react to his new environment, but he might have a direct and clear impact on the Flames' fate.
