On Thursday, reports that were trending on social media were made that Montreal Canadiens goalie Jake Allen was about to get traded to the Colorado Avalanche. However, the trade never materialized and it’s hard to say if the rumours weren’t true, or if the deal fell through. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Avalanche did sniff around Allen, but there haven’t been meaningful discussions between the two teams for the better part of two weeks.

The trade market for goalies has been quite quirky lately with not just Allen hearing his name in speculations, but also Calgary Flames’ Jacob Markstrom, Nashville Predators’ Juuse Saros, Anaheim Ducks’ John Gibson and Minnesota Wild’s Marc-Andre Fleury. However with the latter wanting to stay put and Gibson getting injured last night, some teams might circle back to Allen, though Pierre LeBrun explains what we might expect to happen trade wise when it comes to the Habs’ veteran netminder. In his latest column in the Athletic, LeBrun spoke with Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, who stated that he is willing to be patient in moving Allen.

“A lot of times, they want it resolved by the trade deadline, but as it happened last year with different situations that we didn’t get done at the deadline, we did them in the summer. So if it’s there, we’ll do it. If it’s not, I’m confident it’s going to be resolved one way or another before the start of next season.”

The truth when it comes to attempting to move Allen at the trade deadline is that the goalie has another year on his deal and it isn’t ideal for all teams looking for an upgrade in between the pipes. It may be why the Avalanche has backed out, seeing that they are looking at rental options to get a push into the postseason at a lower cost.

LeBrun adds: "my understanding is that some teams have told Montreal they would be in a better position to talk about an Allen trade come June for that reason. Keep in mind that he’s got a modified no-trade clause to navigate, too."
