The New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings have made a trade.

According to an official announcement from the Red Wings organization, the team has acquired veteran defenseman Marc Staal and a second round draft selection at the 2021 National Hockey League entry Draft in exchange for future considerations.

Earlier today the Red Wings announced two relatively minor signings and when we covered those we speculated on the fact that they were exactly the kind of moves a general manager would make before weaponizing his cap space, and that very much appears to be what Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has done here.

The trade of Staal for effectively nothing is clearly designed to be a salary cap dump on the part of the Rangers, and the second round pick that came with the player is no doubt an added bonus that Yzerman pried away from the Rangers before agreeing to this deal.
