The Detroit Red Wings are back in action tonight in the nation's capital city, taking on the Washington Capitals in what will be a critical matchup in terms of where both teams find themselves in the standings. As it currently stands, the Red Wings trail the Capitals by a mere three points in the Wild Card chase thanks to a five game winning streak that was broken earlier in the week by the Seattle Kraken.

And ahead of tonight's game, it was announced by Red Wings bench boss Derek Lalonde that it will in fact be forward Jakub Vrana returning to the lineup for the first time since October 15. He'll finally be facing his former team, something that he hasn't done since the blockbuster trade in April of 2021 that saw him sent from the Capitals to the Red Wings in exchange for Anthony Mantha.

Of course, a corresponding lineup move was needed in order to facilitate Vrana's return to action. According to Lalonde, it will be forward Filip Zadina who will be watching the game from the press box.

Vrana, who was a member of the 2018 Stanley Cup winning Capitals squad, agreed to a three year contract extension with the Red Wings in the summer of 2021. However, his first full season in Detroit was anything but ideal, as he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery on the 1st shift of training camp that fall. But when he returned, he was lighting the lamp at a 40-goal pace.

This season, he played in two games before entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program for an undisclosed personal matter; he spent nearly two months in the program before being reinstated in mid-December. He's since been getting re-acclimated to professional hockey with the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

Tonight's game at Capital One Arena is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM EST.
