There were several Detroit Red Wings players who hit the waiver wire today, while several more players were assigned to the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

The following players have been assigned to Grand Rapids:

  • Alexandre Doucet
  • Marco Kasper
  • Amadeus Lombardi
  • Albert Johansson
  • Antti Tuomisto
  • Eemil Viro
  • William Wallinder
  • Sebastian Cossa

The Red Wings also released Joel L’Esperance, Riley Sawchuk, Dominik Shine and Tyler Spezia and Josiah Didier from their tryouts; they're heading to Grand Rapids. Additionally, goaltender Michael Hutchinson has been signed to a professional tryout with the Griffins.

Meanwhile, the following players have been waived:

  • Austin Czarnik
  • Tim Gettinger
  • Taro Hirose
  • John Lethemon
  • Jared McIsaac
  • Wyatt Newpower
  • Brogan Rafferty
  • Nolan Stevens

For head coach Derek Lalonde, the competition in both training camp and the preseason has been positive and productive.

“We were comfortable going into camp feeling we have seven NHL D, a luxury we haven’t had for a very long time, and nobody separated themselves in a negative way,” Lalonde said after Friday’s practice. “All seven D had a very good camp and showed to their strengths. The reality of it sometimes is maybe camp would separate. There’s been zero separation of the seven D. That’s a really good sign for us. It’s hard to get D depth. It’ll still be a work in progress through tomorrow and those three practices next week.”

The Red Wings are back in action tomorrow night at Little Caesars Arena against the Toronto Maple Leafs in what will be their final dress rehearsal before the real fun begins next Thursday in the regular season opener at New Jersey.
