A Holiday three way!?!?
The Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Anaheim Ducks have all hooked up on a three-way trade this Monday afternoon.
It's a little convoluted, as three-ways can sometimes be, so try to keep up:
So, essentially the Red Wings acquire Danny O'Regan, the Panthers acquire Giovanni Smith and the Ducks acquire Michael Del Zotto. Not a blockbuster trade by any means, but a threesome is always intriguing to me... just don't tell my wife...
In all seriousness, this looks to be mostly a swap of scenery for both O'Regan and Smith. Del Zotto is the biggest name in the deal, but his best before date has long since passed and he's essentially just a depth AHL player at this point of his career. In fact, the Ducks have even stated that he'll be assigned to the AHL's San Diego Gulls. O'Regan has put up 18 points in 27 games with the Gulls this season and could work his way into the Red Wings' roster. More than likely though he'll suit up for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.
The 24 year old Smith will get a shot with the Panthers after failing to crack the Red Wings' full-time roster this season. The native of Toronto, Ont played 46 games for the Red Wings last season, but has mostly played in the AHL this campaign. Of the three men traded this afternoon, he likely has the most upside and will be given the biggest opportunity to salvage an NHL career. In total he has seven goals and 14 points in 85 career NHL games, all with the Red Wings. He was drafted in the 2nd round (46th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and looked at times poised to become an impact player at the NHL level. It'll be interesting to see how a change of scenery, a new coach and a new system of structure affects his game. Here's hoping the kid can get his NHL hopes and dreams back on track. Stay tuned.
