In case you missed it last night, a Detroit Red Wings fan managed to hurl an octopus on the ice in the final minute of the team’s game against the Minnesota Wild. Big deal, right? This sort of stuff happens all the time at Red Wings games. True… but not when the Wings are on the road.

The Wings dropped a 4-2 decision to the Wild last night IN Minnesota… not home in Detroit. Sneaking an octopus into enemy territory and then hurling it on the ice while you’re surrounded by rabid Minnesota hockey fans takes a lot of guts…

Check it out:

You know what? Let the Wings fans have this… they don’t have much else to cheer for these days. I mean… just look at the standings. The Wings are an embarrassing 12-35-4 this season with just 28 points. They’re dead last at 31st in the NHL, with the 30th place Los Angeles Kings way ahead of them with 41 points. Ouch.

Suffice it to say these are tough times for the once perennial Stanley Cup contenders. There’s reason to believe that things are changing though. 2018 sixth overall selection Filip Zadina scored two goals last night. Dulan Larkin is emerging as a true leader and youngsters like Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha appear ready to take a big step. Still… there’s a long way to go for the Wings if they’re going to get back to contender status.

With franchise icon Steve Yzerman guiding the ship and with rumors that his good friend Gerard Gallant might be stepping behind the team’s bench though, there’s reason to believe that better times are ahead for the Original Six franchise.
