The Detroit Red Wings are navigating one of their most chaotic offseasons in years. Steve Yzerman is gone, trade speculation refuses to die down, and the fanbase is running on fumes. But on Thursday, the team's official account decided to post a birthday greeting for captain Dylan Larkin, and the response was anything but celebratory.

The post, which featured a photo of Larkin alongside cake and party emojis, quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of views. It also attracted over a thousand replies, and the overwhelming majority of them were hostile.

Fans did not hold back. The replies filled up with memes, sarcastic GIFs, and pointed jabs at the superstar who requested a trade earlier this summer. One reply featuring a dismissive reaction image racked up over 16,000 quote posts alone. Another user joked about what they would wish for when Larkin blows out his candles, pulling in thousands more interactions.

The frustration is not coming out of nowhere. Larkin has been at the center of trade chatter for weeks, and his reported desire to leave has left a bitter taste among the Detroit faithful. Just weeks earlier, fans had already been fuming after Larkin was spotted shirtless and smiling at the FIFA World Cup final alongside NHL players Cole Caufield, Trevor Zegras, and Filip Forsberg. The carefree appearance struck a nerve with supporters who feel the franchise is in crisis mode.

Some fans used the post as another opportunity to question Larkin's conditioning and commitment. Others simply mocked the idea of the team publicly celebrating a player who reportedly wants out. The disconnect between the organization's cheerful social media tone and the reality of the situation was not lost on anyone scrolling through the replies.

Detroit is operating under new leadership with head coach Todd McLellan navigating as he can following Yzerman's departure, and the direction of the franchise remains unclear. In that environment, even a routine birthday post becomes a lightning rod. The sheer volume of negative responses serves as a reminder of just how fractured the relationship between the captain and the fanbase has become during this turbulent summer.
