Red Wings have quietly signed a 23 year old free agent forward.
News was reportedly confirmed by Hakan Andersson.
The Detroit Red Wings may be closing out the regular season, but behind the scenes the organization continues to work diligently in its efforts to secure the top young talent both from North American and overseas.
This week rumors began to circulate that suggested 23 year old Swedish forward Pontus Andreasson had come to some type of agreement with the Red Wings, rumors that now appear to be entirely confirmed. During a recent interview, Red Wings Director of European Scouting Hakan Andersson revealed that the team had in fact signed the Swedish prospect, and went so far as to reveal that it would be a two way deal for Andreasson which likely means he will spend time in both the American Hockey League and the National Hockey League if things go according to plan.
"He has signed a two-way contract which in short and concrete means that he has a salary if he is placed with us in Red Wings and another salary if he ends up in the farmers' league," said Hakan (translated from Swedish).
Andreasson is currently competing in the Swedish Hockey League with Lulea HF, where he is in the middle of the best season of his young career. In 52 regular season games Andreasson scored 18 goals and registered 20 assists for a combined total of 38 points. Thus far in the playoffs he has accumulated 7 goals and 2 assists for 9 points in just 5 playoff games for Lulea HF.
It may be that the reason this deal has been kept under wraps is due to the fact that Andreasson is still currently competing for Lulea HF, meaning the deal can't be officially announce until their playoff run comes to an end one way or another. On Friday Andreasson scored a series clinching goal for his team in order to advance to the next round of the playoffs, so the official announcement likely won't be coming right away. Given how well he has played in these playoffs thus far, including a hat trick earlier in the same series, the Red Wings will be very happy they already have an agreement in place.
