The Detroit Red Wings may be next.

In what has already been a crazy offseason in the National Hockey League, one already filled with huge contracts and ludicrous offers sheets, it sounds like there could be even more mayhem coming the Red Wings way.

On Monday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that none other than the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes have given serious thought to the possibility of targeting the Red Wings with an offer sheet. Friedman believes that the Hurricanes see a great deal of value in defenseman Simon Edvinsson, which could mean bad news for the Red Wings.

"I'll tell you the other player I heard in conjunction with them was Simon Edvinsson from the Red Wings," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "He's a really good player and if they lose [Alexander] Nikishin they are gonna need a defenseman. I think Edvinsson would be excellent for their system."

If the Hurricanes do in fact move on from Nikishin this summer as many have predicted, that would leave them with just under $10 million in cap space with which they could do some significant damage through the mechanism of an offer sheet. How far they would be prepared to go for a player like Edvinsson remains to be seen.

The Swedish defenseman was selected in the first round (6th overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings and is coming off a strong showing in his first real season in the NHL. In 72 games Edvinsson had 9 goals and 16 assists for 25 points and finished his first season on a non-playoff team with a plus minus rating of +12.

He made just $894,167 last season in the last year of his entry level contract and with this kind of talk currently around him he's likely in store for a seismic raise.
