Red Wings insider breaks down the Johan Franzen situation.

The Detroit Red Wings have a number of things to concern themselves with this offseason, but one thing that will be a no-brainer according to Red Wings insider Ansar Khan is how the team proceeds with Johan Franzen.

When asked in an recent exclusive interview with Mlive.com why Franzen simply didn't opt to retire Khan revealed that because of how the move would impact both parties, they are likely to mutually agree to have Franzen remain on long-term injured reserve until his contract expires.

Retirement is a bad option for the team and the player because the Red Wings would incur a cap recapture penalty and Franzen would be sacrificing $7.5 million (his actual salary over the final four seasons).

If Franzen retired today, the Red Wings would face a cap hit of roughly $2.09 million in each of the next four seasons. Cap recapture and the 35-and-over rule are different.

This is why remaining on long-term injured reserve for the duration of the contract is the most likely scenario. He gets paid and the club gets cap relief.

If the Red Wings spend 100% of their cap they could receive as much as $3.95 million in cap relief by leaving Franzen on LTIR, and that's likely enough freedom to add one more quality player..
