Red Wings make two big changes to their lineup after just 1 game.
The Detroit Red Wings will be making some significant changes after an embarrassing start to their season.
On Saturday, Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan confirmed that he would be making a pair of swaps to his lineup. McLellan informed reporters that both veteran defenseman Travis Hamonic and forward Elmer Soderblom would be coming out of the lineup for the second game of the season.
The decision to swap out Hamonic will come as no surprise to anyone who watched the Red Wings season opener, with the reaction on social media to Hamonic's play being incredibly vitriolic. Fans were concerned with the signing of Hamonic considering how much he has struggle in recent years, and it seems that they have seen enough to justify those concerns after just one game.
Here are just some of the responses to Hamonic's performance in the season opener:
It will be interesting to see how long we go before we see Hamonic back in the lineup.
The decision to sit Soderblom also makes sense given that it looked like James van Riemsdyk would be back in the lineup after being activated to the roster earlier today, but that will not be the case. Instead the two men drawing into the lineup will be forward Jonatan Berggren and defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker.
Beggren is a known commodity for the Red Wings at this point with all 154 of his NHL games coming under the Red Wings umbrella, while you would be hard pressed to argue that Hamonic should remain in the lineup making any replacement make sense in these scenario.
Only time will tell if it will produce different results for the Red Wings when they face the Toronto Maple Leafs later tonight.
