The Detroit Red Wings have been forced to make an emergency call up and while it has fans excited it has also raised some concerns.

On Saturday morning, the Red Wings officially announced the emergency call up of 20 year old rookie forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins.

Fans are understandably excited at the prospect of seeing Brandsegg-Nygard, the Red Wings first round selection (15th overall) at the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft, especially given the kind of season he has had thus far for the aforementioned Griffins. In 50 AHL games this season the youngster has 16 goals and 21 assists for a total of 37 points and fans have been salivating at the prospect of seeing more out of him at the NHL level.

Brandsegg-Nygard has played at the NHL level this season, but appeared in just games in which he had no goals and 1 assist, finishing with a plus minus rating of -5 over that stretch of play.

The concern of course comes from what this could imply about the injury to Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, who was injured after an awkward fall during a game against the Florida Panthers. Head coach Todd McLellan indicated that he did not expect Larkin to be out long term following the incident, but this latest move may signal that Larkin will indeed miss some time.

Stay tuned.
