Red Wings make low-ball trade offer to the Islanders.

The Red Wings offer the Islanders a trade, but is it really just a slap in the face?

The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly looking to upgrade on their blue line and they may be looking to take advantage of another team in the National Hockey League in order to do so.

Recently, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the New York Islanders are seriously considering the possibility of trading young defenseman Noah Dobson, with Dobson set to earn a massive raise on his next contract.

"I think the Islanders have a bit of a decision to make here," admitted Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

There have been rumblings that the Islanders are looking to clear room on their blue line with Alexander Romanov also being mentioned as a possible trade target, but Friedman and his sources are clearly pointing to Dobson as the more likely trade target.

"I know there's been a lot of Romanov rumors but I've had a few people tell me that Dobson is the guy to really keep an eye on," said Friedman.

The issue here for the Islanders appears to be the fact that Dobson could earn over $10 million in terms of his average annual value and cap hit on his next contract.

"I think the Islanders are investigating all possibilities," said Friedman. "I think they know he's gonna be an eight figure guy so the Islanders have to decide 'Are we gonna pay that or is someone else gonna pay that?'"

That someone else it would seem could very well be general manager Steve Yzerman, with reports that the Red Wings have already made the Islanders a low ball offer. Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey now reports that the Red Wings effectively offered a pair of third liners for Dobson, something that isn't going to get the deal done.

a pair of Detroit forwards, JT Compher and Jonathan Berggren, are part of the package being offered to the Isles. Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman may also be willing to part with draft picks to make this deal happen.

While Compher is a reliable forward he is 30 years of age and put up just 32 points for the Red Wings over 76 games last season.

Berggren has some upside as a 24 year old prospect but has been a source of frustration for the Red Wings at times. Last season he put up 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points over 75 games, and I doubt very much he is a player that the Islanders would be clamoring to get their hands on.

The Red Wings will need to seriously increase their offer if they hope to get this trade across the finish line.
