Red Wings officially announce hiring of new GM

It has been a wild offseason in Detroit, to say the least. After Steve Yzerman was moved out of the general manager chair back in mid-July, the Red Wings have spent the better part of two months searching for the right person to lead their hockey operations. A search firm was brought in, reportedly drawing interest from around 100 candidates across the hockey world. And yet, with training camp set to open in just two days, the team still hadn't landed on a permanent hire.

So what did they do? They looked right down the hallway.

On Tuesday, the Red Wings officially named Shawn Horcoff as their interim general manager. The 47-year-old (he turns 48 later this week) has been embedded in the organization since 2016, when he first joined as an assistant director of player development. Over the years, his responsibilities grew steadily. He became the GM of the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins, was promoted to assistant general manager in 2022, and had already been running the day-to-day front office operations since Yzerman's departure.

A Familiar Face With a Long To-Do List

Horcoff is no stranger to the hockey world. Before transitioning to management, he enjoyed a 15-year NHL playing career that spanned 1,008 games with Edmonton, Dallas, and Anaheim. He also played four seasons at Michigan State before going pro. His deep familiarity with the Red Wings' roster, prospects, and organizational philosophy made him the logical choice to step in while the broader search continues.

Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch expressed his confidence in Horcoff in a statement, noting that Horcoff has "complete support and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of the organization." Ilitch also emphasized that the search for a permanent head of hockey operations is far from over, calling it a "thorough, methodical" process that will continue on the team's own timeline. Horcoff himself remains among the candidates being considered for the full-time role.

The timing of this whole saga has been awkward, to put it mildly. Yzerman's transition to a senior adviser role came after he had already guided the team through the NHL Draft and the free agency frenzy. That left the Wings scrambling to find a new leader at a point in the calendar when most front offices around the league were already locked in for the season. The organization has also reportedly been prioritizing candidates with a strong analytics background, similar to the approach taken by the Ilitch-owned Detroit Tigers under Scott Harris.

Challenges Ahead for the Interim GM

Horcoff inherits a situation that comes with some serious urgency. Perhaps the most pressing item on his desk is getting a new contract done with Simon Edvinsson, the talented young defenseman who is currently a restricted free agent. Edvinsson is expected to report to training camp, but the deal still needs to get done.

Then there is the Dylan Larkin situation. The longtime face of the franchise requested a trade back in June, and the Wings have since stripped him of the team captaincy. Larkin is expected to report to camp this week, but having an interim GM at the helm rather than a permanent one could complicate any trade negotiations or attempts at resolution.

The bigger picture in Detroit remains sobering. The Red Wings have now missed the playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons, the longest active drought in the NHL. Yzerman, a Hall of Fame player who led the Wings to three Stanley Cup championships as a player, was unable to replicate that magic from the front office during his tenure as GM from 2019 onward. Whoever ultimately takes over this team on a permanent basis will be tasked with ending that drought and restoring a once-proud franchise to relevance.

For now, that responsibility falls on Horcoff's shoulders, even if only temporarily. Training camp opens Thursday, and there is plenty of work to be done before the puck drops on the regular season.
