The Detroit Red Wings pulled off something of a curious move earlier this week when they made the move to acquire both Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for future considerations.

It was a curious move because immediately following the trade it was made clear that Yamamoto was destined for a buyout, while Kostin would not be qualified by the Red Wings as a restricted free agent.

On Saturday morning however the plan behind the move has come into focus as general manager Steve Yzerman got a last piece of business done as far as this particular deal was concerned.

The Red Wings have now officially announced that they have signed Kostin to a 2 year deal, one that will carry a very reasonable average annual value and salary cap hit of just $2 million per season.

Kostin, a former first round pick of the St. Louis Blues, is coming off of what was his best NHL season by far with the Edmonton Oilers. Last season he had a career high of 11 goals and a career high of 10 assists for, you guessed it, a career high 21 points over 57 games as an Oiler.

The 24 year old centerman is a low-risk signing at this cost, and that goes double when you consider how little the Red Wings had to give up to acquire him.
