The Detroit Red Wings have been shorthanded for nearly the entire 2022-23 NHL season, as forward Tyler Bertuzzi suffered a broken hand in just the second game on the schedule. He was joined on the sidelines by forward Jakub Vrana, who entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program for an undisclosed personal issue.
Additionally, forward Oskar Sundqvist has been absent of late due to an upper body injury, while forward FIlip Zadina will now be out for the foreseeable future after blocking a shot during Saturday's tilt against the New York Islanders. Of course, Detroit started the season without forward Robby Fabbri (torn ACL) and defenseman Jake Walman (offseason surgery).
Following today's morning skate, head coach Derek Lalonde provided a critical update on the health of Detroit's walking wounded, and the news is positive. According to Lalonde, Sundqvist could be back as soon as this Thursday against the New York Rangers, while Bertuzzi and Walman could potentially return within the next 7-10 days and could make an appearance on Detroit's upcoming Western road swing.
This would be welcome news for Detroit, who have been getting balanced scoring from the likes of Dominik Kubalik, David Perron, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond in their absence.
