As if this team needed more bad news.

The Detroit Red Wings have been caught in a maddening funk since the calendar turned to March, having dropped eight of nine games and seeing their lead in the playoff race completely disappear. As of now, the Washington Capitals have leapfrogged Detroit for the 2nd Wild Card playoff spot, while the Islanders remain in hot pursuit.

And of course, almost all of this has taken place without the services of captain Dylan Larkin, who was hurt on February 29 in Detroit's 4-0 setback against the Florida Panthers. The Red Wings have endured several embarrassing losses to lesser opponents, including a pair of losses against the lottery bound Arizona Coyotes along with a drubbing against the Buffalo Sabres in western New York.

Tonight, the Red Wings face a must-win situation against the Eastern Conference's worst team, the Columbus Blue Jackets. Right now, Larkin is not expected to suit up, and there's even more concerning news to be shared. Not only will defenseman Jake Walman not be playing, but forward Michael Rasmussen has been designated as a game-time decision.

Walman is currently dealing with a lower-body injury, the same ailment that Larkin was diagnosed with. Additionally, Rasmussen is feeling "under the weather".

Needless to say, the Red Wings absolutely cannot afford to drop another game against a team that they should easily best on paper. But as they say, games aren't won on paper, but rather on the ice.
