Red Wings reveal feelings on facing ex-teammate Tyler Bertuzzi
Detroit faces Boston in back to back games this weekend.

After over 300 games wearing the Winged Wheel, the Tyler Bertuzzi era officially ended in the Motor City as he was traded by the Detroit Red Wings at last week's National Hockey League Trade Deadline to the Atlantic Division rival Boston Bruins (who happen to be running away with the NHL's best record) for a package that included two draft selections.
He immediately made an impact with his new teammates, picking up an assist in Boston's 4-2 victory over the visiting New York Rangers in his first game wearing the black and gold. And he won't have to wait long to face off against his former Red Wings teammates, as Detroit and Boston will play a home and home series this weekend.
For the Red Wings, who were clearly emotional over Bertuzzi's departure as evidenced by captain Dylan Larkin literally holding back tears, it will be an unusual pair of games to say the least.
“He said it’s cool playing on a good team,” said Larkin, who has remained in contact with Bertuzzi via text. “He’s going to feel more comfortable as time goes on. I’m excited to watch tonight. That’ll be a fun game to watch.”
“He’s going to do really well," Larkin continued. "He’s going to go on a run. I’m really happy for him in that sense.”
“It’s definitely going to be a bit awkward for us,” Joe Veleno said. “You don’t really imagine him in a different jersey. Boston seems to kind of suit him. He’s well-liked by all the boys. It’s going to be really nice to see him and a bit weird to play against him.”
Will there be any on-ice chirping going on?
“I think he knows us way too well, most of us,” Veleno said. “I’m sure with him it’ll be mostly just friendly chirps and play the game of hockey.”
According to head coach Derek Lalonde, it's going to be a good experience for Bertuzzi suiting up for a bonafide title contender.
“He gets an opportunity to play meaningful hockey down the stretch and it’s just different,” Lalonde said. “You’re asked for a little more detail in your game. You’re asked for a little bit different, maybe in some of your habits. I think it’s going to be a really good experience for him.”
