This will have a polarizing reaction.

Regardless of the backlash that it caused, the National Hockey League proceeded with the decision to allow their teams to officially introduce sponsorships on their helmets and sweaters as a way of making up for revenue lost from the multiple game cancellations owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even several Original 6 teams have gotten into the trend, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens. And now, it appears as though the Detroit Red Wings are going to be doing the same.

According to Brad Galli of WXYZ, the Red Wings are set to introduce their first ever jersey patch partnership ahead of tomorrow evening's game against the New York Islanders at Little Caesars Arena.

Needless to say, this has already garnered overwhelming negative reaction on social media.

The Red Wings already have a helmet sponsorship, currently held by Meijer. They also previously had UWM as a helmet sponsor. However, they've never had any kind of advertisement on their sweaters. They've had a variety of patches through the years, including the special "Believe" patch in 1997-98, the "Mr. I" patch in 2016-17.

It's going to be very understandable why there is going to be negative reaction to this announcement, as the Red Wings sweater is one of the most iconic in all of sports and shouldn't be messed with.
