A veteran defenseman will almost certainly be traded this season and it will likely be as a result of his team under-performing.

Detroit Red Wings blue liner Mike Green is having another solid start to a season with 2 goals and 18 assists for 20 points in his first 28 games but despite that the Red Wings are way out of a playoff spot.

The Red Wings currently sit 8 points out of a playoff spot although they do have 2 games in hand on the team they need to catch, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Detroit Red Wings insider Helen St. James believes that if the playoff picture continues to look bleak for the Wings it will put an end to his time in Detroit.

From The Detroit Free Press:

If, like last season, they deem the playoffs unlikely, absolutely he will get moved. And he should fetch a nice return — Brendan Smith yielded a second-round and third-round pick, and Green has way more offensive skill. Green will be highly attractive to a potential contender looking to add scoring.

There's no doubting Green's offensive potential even at this stage of his career, and Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will be looking to take advantage of that before losing Green for nothing as a free agent at the end of the season.
