A proficient backup goaltender may be willing to test his luck in free-agency this summer. It appears that for the second straight season Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Thomas Greiss could explore free-agency. Although his agent has not ruled out his client re-signing with the Pens', there have been no contract talks with the team. “We’ve spoken and neither side has closed the door but we’re not actively negotiating at this time either,” agent Ray Petkau told Pro Hockey Talk's Mike Halford in an e-mail Monday. “We’ll speak again before July 1st.” Greiss went 9-6-3 with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 20 games in relief of Marc-Andre Fleury. He was sidelined while recovering from the Mumps virus and only appeared in two games in December. Greiss tested free agency last summer before signing a one-year, $1-million deal. The Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers are two teams in dire need of goaltending depth. They could be candidates for a signing should negotiations with Pittsburgh fall through.
