Report: Athanasiou comes up empty handed in Europe

Is the 23-year-old getting some bad advice from his agent?

Today marks exactly one week since Darren Ferris, agent for Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou, proclaimed his one week deadline for a contract between his client and Wings GM Ken Holland. It’s expected that Ferris’ self-imposed deadline will come and go today with no further clarity in the murky negotiations between both sides.

Interestingly, Ferris did make a statement today claiming simply that Athanasiou is still in Switzerland. He declined a response though when asked if the player had received an offer from a Swiss-league team, however.

You may recall that Athanasiou received a KHL offer from Ak Bars Kazan back in August, but with the KHL more than a month into its season, it’s unlikely the 23-year old plays there this season. So, what’s next for AA? With no offer in Europe and a two-year, $3.38 million offer waiting in Detroit, the answer should be obvious. For every day this stalemate drags out, the youngster loses out on $10,000 salary.

Something’s gotta give…
