Report: Athanasiou may finally sign in the KHL

Here's a contract situation that everyone just wants to see get resolved sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, it may in fact be soon - and not in the way fans or management would hope.

As it has been reported, Detroit Red Wings young forward Andreas Athanasiou headed overseas to skate with HC Lugano in Switzerland. He has no contract with the team and it isn't expected that he signs with them, but there is another option he is seriously considering.

It had been reported to Craig Custance of The Athletic back in August that the speedy forward had an offer on the table with a KHL club, and now that the contract situation has hit a point where the player has headed overseas to skate and practice, it seems more and more likely that the kid's short-term future is in Russia.

Detroit's offer on the table is two years at $1.9 million a year. Athanasiou is reportedly seeking $2.5 million a year.
