The Colorado Avalanche are currently without a coach but they are still looking to continue improving their roster.

The organization announced on Tuesday that they had added veteran forward and former Stanley Cup Champion Ben Smith to their roster, signing him to a one-year deal the terms of which were not immediately made available.

This is clearly a depth signing, and it's unclear how much playing time Smith will get an the National Hockey League level this season with Colorado. Smith had a rocky season last year spending time bouncing between the American Hockey League and NHL and was eventually traded by the Sharks to Toronto where he appeared in 16 NHL games putting up 6 points over that stretch.

Smith does bring nearly 200 NHL games experience however, and he has won a championship in the NHL as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks and it's perhaps those intangible elements that convinced general manager Joe Sakic to bring him into the fold.
