Looks like his status has been decided.

The Montreal Canadiens were without their former Hart Trophy-winning goaltender Carey Price for most of the season as he checked himself into the NHL's Player Assistance Program, as well as rehabilitating from offseason surgery.

To begin the year, this meant that veteran Jake Allen was tabbed as the starter in the crease. Unfortunately, the squad in front of him just was not very good. His total record for the 2021-22 season was a pedestrian 9-20-4 with a 3.30 goals against average. He's seen his name pop up in trade rumors in recent weeks, and could be an intriguing option for several teams who are looking for some additional help between the pipes. However, it appears as though those teams will have to look elsewhere.

According to NHL Network's Kevin Weekes, the Habs are in discussions with Allen regarding a contract extension that would keep him in Montreal.

He writes on Twitter:

"On me dit, @CanadiensMTL sont en les discussions avec G Jake Allen sur une prolognation de Contrat pluriannuelle.

I’m told @CanadiensMTL are in discussions w G Jake Allen on multi yr Contract extension."

Allen, who currently under contract for one more season with an AAV of $2.875 million, may be Montreal's best option in net for the foreseeable future, especially combined with the fact that it was announced earlier today that Price would be going on LTIR.
