On Monday, the Vancouver Canucks have hired player agent Émilie Castonguay as assistant GM, becoming the first female assistant general manager in team history.

On Tuesday, it felt like Jim Rutherford was getting closer to appointing a new general manager as Pierre LeBrun reported that the team was down to five candidates. LeBrun revealed that Mathieu Darche, who had been a contender to take the same job for the Montreal Canadiens before Kent Hughes was nominated last week, has a shot at landing the job in Vancouver. Darche a two-time Stanley Cup-winning executive, is in his third season as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s director of hockey operations. A McGill University alumnus and St. Laurent, Quebec product, Darche played 250 games across nine NHL seasons. The insider was able to name three more candidates in the running with Patrik Allvin, Scott Mellanby, Sean Burke among final candidates. One mystery candidates remained in the competition as well.

But later on Tuesday, Darren Dreger revealed that Rutherford has made his decision and that Patrik Allvin was the Canucks general manager.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Face-off and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman also reported the news.

Allvin is a longtime Penguins executive, who worked with Rutherford during his time in Pittsburgh. Rutherford has previously indicated that he would likely hire a first-time general manager that he could groom and Allvin fits the description.

Allvin has won three Stanley Cups with the Penguins since joining the organization in 2006. He first worked as a scout, then moved up the ladder to director of European scouting, and director of amateur scouting, before being promoted to assistant GM in November 2020.

A new era begins in Vancouver.
