Oof... I think I would have taken this and ran all the way to the bank! Thoughts?
According to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Vancouver Canucks turned down a trade offer from the San Jose Sharks for embattled defenseman Tyler Myers.
Myers, the owner of a $6 million cap hit, has long been the source of frustration for Canucks fans and he's been on the trade block seemingly for years now. The thing is... he's actually a good defenseman. Sure, he's probably not worth the $6 million contract that he earns, but he's still a valuable defenseman.
So... who did the Sharks offer up in return for Myers? Seravalli reports that Sharks GM Mike Grier offered up winger Kevin Labanc in a straight up, one for one deal.
Labanc is a quality forward who put up 15 goals and 33 points last season for the Sharks, but he represents just a $1.25 million cap savings for the Canucks in a one for one swap for Myers. The Canucks would then have to replace Myers in their lineup, no easy task. There's also the fact that the Canucks have an absolute glut of top six wingers including Brock Boeser, Ilya Mikheyev, Andrei Kuzmenko, Anthony Beauvillier, Conor Garland, Nils Hoglander and Vasili Podkolzin. It's clear to me why Canucks GM Patrik Alvin would then decline this deal from the Sharks.
Thoughts, Canucks fans?
