The Washington Capitals are looking to keep their franchise superstar and frankly who can blame them.

According to a breaking news report out of Russia, one that comes from Metaratings.ru, the Washington Capitals have tabled an enormous offer in an effort to prevent Ovechkin from hitting the free agent market at the end of the 2020 - 2021 National Hockey League regular season. The report indicates that Ovechkin would be getting a raise on his current salary, which just tops $9.5 million per season, with a contract that would pay him as much as $10 million per season. The report suggests that this offer would be on either a 3 or 5 year deal, so I suspect that the actual cap number would fluctuate depending on how much term Ovechkin would be signing for here.

Thus far Ovechkin has played his entire career as a member of the Washington Capitals, appearing in 1152 games and recording 706 goals and 572 assists for a total of 1278 career points so far. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time in the sport of hockey and although this deal may seem a bit rich for a player at 34 years of age in the NHL, there's no question that Ovechkin is a unique player both in terms of his talent and his marketability. I suspect that the Capitals will do everything they can to retain him well before the 2020 - 2021 season has concluded.

No word yet on whether or not Ovechkin intends to accept the offer.
