The 2025-26 season is likely to be a pivotal one for the Boston Bruins.

After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade in 2024-25, the team is staring down the barrel of another difficult season this fall and will be hard pressed to get back into the post-season. Fans and analysts are predicting the Bruins to take another step back in 2025-26, maybe forcing GM Don Sweeney into a full-scale rebuild?

Bruins insider Jimmy Murphy reports today that Sweeney has been trying to trade 26 year old center Casey Mittelstadt this offseason and that his time with the team could be coming to an abrupt end. The Bruins, of course, acquired Mitteldstadt from the Colorado Avalanche along with prospect William Zellers and a 2nd round pick in exchange for Charlie Coyle.

Now, less than 20 games into his career with the Bruins, it could be all over.

“I don’t know how many rumors he’s been in, but I’ve been hearing [Casey] Mittelstadt could be on the move again since before the Bruins season even ended,” Murphy says that an NHL executive told him recently. “There was a common feeling that he wasn’t their main target when they traded for him; Zellers and the second-round draft pick were.”

“I know their amateur scouts were hellbent on getting Zellers,” the executive above added. “They were intent on restocking with picks and prospects, and he was one of the prospects they were really targeting. That was a great get by the Bruins, and I think Don [Sweeney] did a great job at the deadline and at the draft in achieving their goal. That being said, where or how does Mittelstadt fit into their plan going forward?

It's worth noting that Murphy has also reported for weeks now that the Bruins are taking offers on Czech forward Pavel Zacha, but just yesterday Murphy reported that the team is also taking offers on backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, as well.

"Trade rumors continue to surround the Boston Bruins, with Joonas Korpisalo and Pavel Zacha's names consistently coming up," Murphy reports.

Here's the thing...

OF COURSE they're trying to trade Korpisalo! His contract stinks!

He's in year three of a five year contract that pays him $4 million annually and he's playing on his fourth team in five years. Yikes...

If the Bruins can find a team desperate enough to take Korpisalo and his contract of their hands, they should absolutely take the deal and run.
