Chris Pronger praises playoff bound Oilers

Hall of Fame defenceman Chris Pronger spoke with CHED AM 630 in Edmonton about his time with the Oilers and the current team’s potential.

The Oilers haven’t made the playoffs since the 2005-06 season, the last season Pronger played for the blue and orange. He was a key part to their success, both in the regular season and in the playoffs.

When asked how he felt about Edmonton finally make their return to the post-season, Pronger said he was “excited for the organization, the fan base, and for sure the players and alumni who are a big part of it… I think the fans have been waiting for this day, and have been very patient for this team to turn the corner”.

He added that “the sky’s the limit for the amount of talent and skill they out there”.

When asked about the most conspicuous talent on the young team, Pronger had this to say about current Oilers captain Connor McDavid: “He’s so skilled and plays at such a high speed that he can make things happen at any given moment and can breakaway, or create something with his vision”. He made comparisons between McDavid and fellow Hall of Fame member Mario Lemieux.

Pronger had nothing but praise for the Oilers organization and their efforts during the long rebuild. Speaking of current Oilers GM he said, “Peter Chiarelli has done an excellent job of putting some pieces together… The Larsson trade wasn’t popular at the time, but I think has proven to be a pretty big addition for their blue line in solidifying the back end”.

Pronger probably knows a thing or two about how important good defensemen can be, he essentially created the mould for modern-day blueliners.

Edmonton has four games remaining and a shot at the Pacific Division title, sitting only two points back from Anaheim with a game in hand. The Oilers play tonight against the LA Kings.
