Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill spoke with members of the media earlier today after his team concluded its practice session.
He took the time to explain why the decision to keep Andreas Athanasiou over Anthony Mantha was made, and clarified that Athanasiou has more speed than the 6’5” Mantha. Moreover, Athanasiou’s strong play last season certainly helped him win the organization over.
Fans are divided when it comes to which prospect deserved to stick around. While Athanasiou managed to score one goal and four points in five games, the argument can be made that Mantha’s three goals in the same span with over two minutes less of average ice-time should have been sufficient in earning him a full-time roster spot.
