When the Winnipeg Jets signed goaltender Steve Mason last summer, everyone was excpecting him to take over as the number one netminder. The Jets had a lot of problems with their goaltender in the past, and many saw this move like the possible solution in front of the Jets net. Mason signed a two year, $8.2 million contract after spending four complete seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. He had great numbers there, as he recorded a 0.917 save percentage and a goals-against average of 2.48.

These numbers were really good, but they are now things of the past. In three starts with the Jets so far, Mason is not even close of his past numbers. His save percentage is at .846 and his goals against average is a catastrophic 5.98.

The Jets can at least count on a strong start from Connor Hellebuyck, who was supposed to be the backup goalie this season. In 4 games played so far, the 23-year old has a save percentage of .937 and a goals against average of 2.11. His cap hit is nearly $2M under Mason's.

If Connor Hellebuyck keeps on playing like that, Steve Mason could become a really expensive backup goaltender.
