Despite the Edmonton Oilers gong in a different direction, former interim head coach Todd Nelson refuses to settle for an assistant position. According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Nelson has been granted permission to speak with other NHL clubs about possible coaching jobs. The Oilers decided on hiring former San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan last week, so Nelson seems like the odd man out. Nelson however, wants to be a head coach and is determined to shop himself to NHL teams in hope of getting a gig.
Nelson took over the head coaching position for the Oilers when the team relieved Dallas Eakins of his duties after 31 games. He went 17-25-9 in 51 games while behind the bench for Edmonton and faired reasonably well. He had some of his younger players buying into his system after the team initially stumbled out of the gate. Nail Yakupov was very consistent in the final 30 games of the season, with moderate offense and good two-way play. Yakupov was the recipient of major criticism during the first portion of the season, but managed to regain confidence under Nelson. This shows he can get through to young players and work with what he has on the roster. Can Nelson get a head coaching position, and if so where would be a good fit?
