Despite the fact that the he seemed to be a fantastic fit for the club, and could likely be retained at a relatively low price the Edmonton Oilers will not re-sign veteran centre Derek Roy. According to a report from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton journal the Oilers will pass on Roy in free agency in large part due to their depth at centre, More from Matheson's report:
It’s unlikely the Oilers will re-sign unrestricted free agent centre Derek Roy now that they’ve got McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Anton Lander, Leon Draisaitl and Boyd Gordon in the middle, but New Jersey needs a centre.
Roy was credited with helping turn around the perception of Nail Yakupov as a potential draft bust in the latter half of last season, and he may be the player who suffers the most from the lost of Roy's veteran presence.
