Report: Elite defenseman was set to be traded for Taylor Hall but blocked the trade.
Keystone Press.

It sounds like the Edmonton Oilers had a massive deal on the table that never came to fruition.

According to a report from Scottrade General the St. Louis Blues and the Oilers had agreed to a deal that would send forward Taylor Hall to the Blues and in exchange the Oilers would receive elite defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

This deal likely would have gone over far better than the trade the Oilers would eventually make, instead acquiring defenseman Adam Larsson, however it doesn't sound like Edmonton's management can be blamed for this fumble.

It appears that the deal breaker didn't come from either team, but instead Shattenkirk himself, who despite recently claiming he wants to be traded "sooner rather than later" put the kibosh on the deal. Shattenkirk reportedly was offered an extension by the Oilers, but refused to sign, effectively ending nay hopes of that trade being made.
