Just days after signing a $20 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers, forward Evander Kane was approached by tabloid TMZ while shopping on Beverly Hills' famous Rodeo Drive with his girlfriend Mara Teigen.

Check it out:

Honestly... I don't know how I feel about this reporting...

I get that people are interested in Kane especially given the headlines that he has generated over the past few years, but accosting him on the street with his wife and his child is a bit much. I fully understand that that may sound hypocritical given that this outlet is covering the story, as well but to me there's a world of difference between reporting on an established story and creating the story yourself by approaching individuals on the street.

In any case, it is interesting that Kane is out shopping at Tiffany's on Rodeo Drive while undergoing bankruptcy proceedings. While an individual's financial matters are no one else's business, things change a bit with public bankruptcy proceedings. And I mean... anyone can hit up CapFriendly to see Kane's salary... it's not like his finances are a secret.

In any case, I sincerely hope that future reporting on Kane has more to do with his on-ice impact rather than his off-ice antics this upcoming season. Here's a guy who has endured not only bankruptcy proceedings but also allegations of illegal gambling, a contentious divorce and a contract termination. I don't suspect that Kane is the victim in all of these things, but the fact of the matter is that he's been through some serious stuff in the past couple years. Personally, I'm pulling for him to put all the BS behind him and to re-establish himself as one of the best power forwards in the NHL. He had instant chemistry with Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl this past season and I'd love nothing more than to see the three of them cause nightmares for NHL goalies league-wide next season. Again, here's hoping that all the nonsense is behind him and that his best days are ahead of him.
