While the name Jeff Gorton may not be familiar to the everyday hockey fan there's are very big expectations for the New York Rangers 11th general manager.
Not only is Gorton stepping into the huge shoes of long time general manager Glen Sather, but the hype around him was amplified tenfold when rumors of multiple teams seeking to lure him away from New York surfaced.
On Saturday fans got a better idea of what his front office will look like when the Rangers announced the hiring of Steve Greeley as assistant director of player personnel and Nickolai Bobrov as director of European scouting.
The Rangers released an official statement welcoming both men to the organization, on Greeley:
Greeley, 34, joins the Rangers organization after serving as the Associate Head Coach of Boston University for the last two seasons. During his tenure at Boston University, Greeley played a vital role in the school’s recruiting process. Last season, he helped the Terriers post the top record in Hockey East during the regular season, capture the Hockey East Championship, and advance to the National Championship Game.
On Bobrov:
Bobrov, 39, joins the Rangers organization after serving as the North American representative for Kontinental Hockey League's Gagarin Cup Champion SKA St. Petersburg for three seasons (2011-12 – 2013-14). Bobrov also assisted Slava Fetisov in his role as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the KHL from 2009-2012.
Gorton now his personnel in position to evaluate and develop players in a way he sees fit.
