The Calgary Flames are a top team this season, currently sitting in 3rd place in the Pacific division and in close contention for the top spot.

Elliotte Friedman revealed recently in his "31 thoughts" segment that the Flames had looked into acquiring center Kyle Turris from the Ottawa Senators over the summer.

Evidently the trade talks subsided, as Ottawa eventually leveraged him for a deal to acquire Matt Duchene with the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators.

It's unknown what pieces were on the table, but one would have to imagine that Calgary was offering up Sam Bennett but couldn't come up with the right combination of pieces to satisfy their's and Ottawa's respective needs.

Turris, 28, has 14 points in 17 games this season split between the Sens and Preds, and would've been a very interesting addition for the Flames.

One element of the botched deal was likely Turris' pending unrestricted free agency status - the uncertainty of him signing long-term probably made it hard to do the dance with Ottawa.
