The Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing back a familiar face into the folds of the organization.

According to an official report from the Toronto Marlies organization, the team has come to terms on a brand new contract with 25 year old defenseman Frankie Corrado. The contract will be an American Hockey League deal exclusively and while that may surprise some the move makes a lot of sense given the current circumstances of Corrado's career.

The former Vancouver Canuck, Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguin is coming off of a devastating knee injury that he suffered back in the month of February and he has not played in a single game at the National Hockey League or American Hockey League since that terrible injury. Corrado's season was cut very short and given the fact that he was already seeing limited use on the Penguins roster it came as little surprised when it was revealed this summer that the Penguins would not extend Corrado a qualifying offer and would instead let him walk as an unrestricted free agent.

What was somewhat surprising however was the fact that not a single team in the league saw enough upside in his play to offer him any kind of contract, although there's no question that his knee injury and the uncertainty it created about his future played a major role in that. Now a few weeks into the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season it seems that his former team, the Maple Leafs, are prepared to give him a a chance to show that he can bounce back and still contribute, albeit at the American Hockey League level for the time being.

This move is particularly interesting due to the fact that Corrado and the Maple Leafs seemingly butted heads fairly consistently during his tenure as a Maple Leaf. Corrado saw very limited use in the Leafs line up and there were some rather blatant leaks to the media that made it clear he was not happy with the fact that he was not being given a chance to develop as an NHL defenseman while on the team. Obviously his current circumstances change things a great deal but nonetheless it's interesting to see him so willingly join the Leafs organization again after somewhat of a rocky past between team and player.
