The Washington Capitals made arguably the biggest move of the season thus far on Monday night acquiring defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk from the St. Louis Blues, but new details emerging about that trade now reveal that the Capitals gave up quite a bit to make it happen.

ESPN insider Pierre LeBrun is now reporting that as part of the deal Washington is sending a first round draft selection in 2017, a conditional second round draft selection in 2018 as well as 22-year-old forward Zach Sanford back the other way.

It's a great deal to give up for what by all accounts will be a rental player who very much intends to hit free agency this summer, but another detail revealed by LeBrun is the fact that the Blues have retained salary on this deal, something that would have driven the price up a fair bit, although it's unclear exactly how much St. Louis is holding on to.

There can be no doubt that this is a signal that Washington intends to go all in for the Stanley Cup this season.
