If you're the Buffalo Sabres, there's a silver lining to losing the NHL Draft Lottery. Although you could never tell by GM Tim Murray's comments following the announcement his team will draft second-overall in 2015. Murray must know that the Edmonton Oilers’ winning the right to draft Connor McDavid – moving up to the No. 1 pick, from their third-worst record and third-best odds – leaves them with a chance to select Jack Eichel, a Boston University center and a franchise player in his own right. However he did a very bad job of welcoming Eichel to the organization. "If you could have one or two, you would naturally want one,” he said, via Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun. He added, "I'm disappointed for our fans." He went on to say things like, "When you have an 80 percent of losing something you have to expect that", and that he "he feels like a Canadian world junior team hopeful who gets called at 6 am and told he's cut." He also mentioned that "It would be fine with me if they would have just phoned me and said we'd lost the lottery." He also said, "I feel for the fans. I mean, we went through a tough year, and I think that they were extremely excited about Connor." If you remember it was Murray who was the architect of the tank-job the Sabres pulled this year in the hope of getting Connor McDavid. Despite their best efforts, they knew there was a chance they could lose. And Murray should have been better prepared for the possibility of the tough loss. Disappointment is normal, but how difficult is it to say "we would have liked to pick first, but we feel we will get a great player either way." If I am in the Jack Eichel camp, I am less than pleased tonight.
