In case you missed it, Philadelphia Flyers president Paul Holmgren announced that the team has relieved general manager Ron Hextall of his duties.

Check it out:

Hextall had been GM of the Flyers since 2014 and in one of his biggest moves, he shipped out Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger to the Arizona Coyotes. The Pronger trade was a paper move in reality, as his playing days were over due to multiple devastating concussions but his contract was still on the books and taking up roughly $4.95 million in cap space. Now, ironically, it may be Pronger who ends up succeeding Hextall as Flyers GM.

According to a report from Andrew Gross of Newsday, Pronger is an “under-the-radar name” for the position in Philly.

Check it out:

Per NHL source, one under-the-radar name to keep in mind for Flyers GM opening is Chris Pronger, currently FlaPanthers senior advisor of hockey operations.

As Gross points out, Pronger is currently employed by the Florida Panthers as a senior advisor underneath GM Dale Tallon. The former tough as nails defenseman has been with the Panthers for just a season, but clearly he’s impressed people around the NHL in his new executive position to work his way up to being a part of GM rumors.

On the ice, Pronger was one of the most skilled, yet feared defensemen or his generation. He was a truly unique player and earned a reputation by playing the game on the edge. He managed a remarkable 698 points in 1167 career games, won the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007, won the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2000 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
