The Matt O' Connor sweepstakes is now over.
The highly touted free-agent goaltender, who narrowed his choices for an NHL team down to four, the New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, has finally made his choice as to who to sign with.
According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, O' Connor has chosen to sign with the Ottawa Senators.
O’Connor, 23, now finds himself in a sticky situation as the Sens' already have Craig Anderson, Robin Lehner, and UFA Andrew Hammond. The Sens' are expected to offer Hammond a contract so it may mean the O' Connor will likely spend at least a year in limbo.
O’ Connor backstopped Boston University Terriers to the NCAA Championship game, where they lost a 4-3 decision to Providence. In that game, O’ Connor mishandled a long shot, giving up a crucial goal and eventually falling by a score of 4-3 to the Providence Friars. Despite that momentary lapse, O’ Connor put up very solid numbers throughout his collegiate career. In 35 games with BU in 2014-2015 he put up a record of 25-4-4 and recorded a G.A.A of 2.18 and a Save Percentage of .927.
