Recently diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, Brian Boyle is fighting hard to make a miraculously early return to the New Jersey Devils.
He’s been skating on his own, which is a positive sign, and is expected back with the team today. Head coach John Hynes expects that about a week of full practice with the team will be adequate preparation for the veteran centerman’s return to the game.
There’s no rush to bring Boyle back, and rightfully so. The Devils are prioritizing a complete recovery. Fortunately, the cancer was caught early and the treatment has been going well.
The hulking center has a wealth of playoff experience that is invaluable to any team, particularly a young team like the Devils. He will serve as a valuable mentor for the likes of top prospects Nico Hischier and Pavel Zacha.
