Report: Issues with Marchenko ahead of Game 1 for Leafs

Kirill Marchenko is officially a Toronto Maple Leaf, and the timing of his arrival could hardly be more dramatic.

The Maple Leafs acquired the 26-year-old Russian winger from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday in a blockbuster deal that sent Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a 2027 second-round pick the other way. Toronto also received Miles Wood and injured goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, while Marchenko immediately signed a six-year, $75-million extension.

But for the Maple Leafs, the biggest question isn't simply what Marchenko brings to the organization over the next six seasons. It's what he can bring to the lineup right now.

Marchenko is coming off a breakout 2025-26 campaign in which he scored 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games for Columbus. That followed a 31-goal, 74-point season in 2024-25, and he has now scored at least 27 goals in each of his past two seasons. In 292 career NHL games, Marchenko has 102 goals and 208 points.

Those numbers make it difficult to envision the Leafs using Marchenko anywhere outside their top six.

The most logical landing spot appears to be on the right side of the second line, potentially alongside John Tavares and one of Toronto's talented young wingers. Another possibility is Marchenko playing alongside Auston Matthews, depending on how head coach Jim Hiller wants to distribute his scoring talent.

NHL.com's analysis suggested Marchenko could line up with either Matthews or Tavares at centre while sharing ice with William Nylander or first-overall pick Gavin McKenna.

My expectation would be for Marchenko to start on the second line with Tavares, giving Toronto a potentially dangerous combination of size, shooting ability and offensive creativity. That would also allow Matthews and Nylander to remain together while giving the Leafs another legitimate scoring threat behind their top unit.

And that could be extremely important for Toronto.

The Leafs spent much of the past decade relying heavily on their established stars to drive their offence. Adding Marchenko gives them another player who has already demonstrated that he can produce at a top-six level. He isn't arriving as a reclamation project or a prospect who might eventually become a scorer. He's coming off consecutive seasons of at least 27 goals.

There is, however, a chance Leafs fans will have to wait a little longer to see exactly where he fits.

General manager John Chayka is hopeful Marchenko can suit up for tonight's season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, but the newly acquired winger is currently working through immigration issues. When asked point blank if Marchenko will play tonight, Chayka responded, "that's the goal."

As a result, Marchenko's status remains a game-time decision.

If Marchenko is cleared in time, it would give Toronto an immediate glimpse at what its revamped top six can look like. If he isn't, Leafs fans may have to wait a few days before seeing their newest major acquisition make his Toronto debut.

Either way, Marchenko's arrival represents a significant change to the Maple Leafs' forward group. Toronto didn't simply replace a familiar top-six winger in Knies — it added a proven goal scorer entering what should be the prime of his NHL career.

Now the challenge will be finding the right combination around him.
