Not for a lack on trying, I'm sure..
With the NHL's trade deadline now just 72 hours away all of Leafs Nation is watching Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving to make some moves.
The Leafs are well out of a playoff spot and they have several pending unrestricted free agents who could be dealt between now and Friday. Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann could all be on the move, but so could the likes of Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brandon Carlo. One player who will NOT be traded though is defenseman Morgan Rielly... not for a lack of trying though, but for a lack of interest.
NHL insider Nick Kypreos reports that while Treliving has tried to shop Rielly around the NHL, no one is interested.
" If Toronto moves a notable defenceman, it'll be Oliver Ekman-Larsson. There is no market for Morgan Rielly," Kypreos reported on Sportsnet yesterday.
Rielly has actually had a relatively productive season with the Leafs given their struggles with eight goals and 32 points in 58 games and is now back in the lineup following an injury that he suffered in late January. The problem is, of course, is that he's only in year four of an eight year deal that pays him $7.5 million annually per season. If the Leafs were going to move him, they'd likely have to retain half of that contract and with four years remaining on the deal that doesn't seem likely.
So... even if the Leafs go for a full on rebuild this upcoming offseason, don't expect Rielly to be one of the veteran players on the move.
