Report: Leafs will try to poach the Flames

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have missed out on acquiring a potential target from the Calgary Flames in defenseman Nikita Zadorov, but that doesn't mean that they're giving up. 

As you know, former Flames general manager Brad Treliving is now running the show in Toronto, having replaced Kyle Dubas on the job after his surprise termination by team president Brendan Shanahan over the summer. And according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Treliving is going to "go hard" after defenseman Chris Tanev. 

"He's a Toronto guy, Treliving signed him (in Calgary), I bet you he'll have a good idea of what it will take to keep him (in Toronto)," Friedman opined in the most recent '32 Thoughts' podcast. "That's the one guy I think Toronto goes hard to get, because even if he's acquired as a rental, I think they're going to be pretty confident they can keep him. But we'll see."

In 24 games played this season, Tanev has scored a goal with five assists along with a +5 rating. In 741 games played, he's scored 32 goals with 146 assists along with an impressive +105 rating. 

He's in the final season of the four-year contract he was given by Treliving that carries a $4.5 million cap hit.
